Public lecture: Federalism and federation in South Africa today

Centralised political authority lies at the heart of state collapse in South Africa today and has historically been the cause of much of the troubles faced by this country’s diverse communities. The Republic of South Africa, however, is a federation, says Dr Martin van Staden. How can this be? Does South Africa have a tradition of federalism? What about Afrikaners in particular? Is federalism always a statist phenomenon? Where to from here for the federalist cause? Dr Van Staden is the inaugural Head of the AfriForum Institute for Federalism and will share some of his insights into these questions.
